File and Print Sharing
MF840 Mutli-function
Appliance uses the Open Source SAMBA to provide Windows users with Server
Message Block (SMB) file sharing. Windows users can find a MF840 Mutli-function
Appliance using the Network Neighborhood without installing any additional
software on their systems. Network File System (NFS) lets you make folders
(or in UNIX terms, directories) available to UNIX and Linux users.
To share files with users who aren’t on your local network, MF840 Mutli-function
Appliance includes an Internet file sharing server. Remote users can
transfer large files over the Internet using a Web browser or a dedicated
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client. You control what known and anonymous
users may access.
Taurus makes it very easy to share printer for any computers connected to
the local area network via the parallel port. This is a faster connection
than a serial connection.
Taurus does not require any printer drivers. Taurus receives the
formatted print job from a client PC/notebook and sends to the printer
connected to Taurus. Hence the printer driver only needed to be installed on
the client PC or notebook.
Access Control using Smartcard Drive
The smart card is one of the latest additions to the world of information
technology. Similar in size to today's plastic payment card, the smart card
has a microprocessor or memory chip embedded in it. The chip stores
electronic data and programs that are protected by advanced security
features. When coupled with the Taurus built-in reader, the smart card has
the processing power to serve many different applications. As an
access-control device, smart cards make personal and business data available
only to the appropriate users.
Security
To prevent unauthorized
network and server access from the outside, MF840 Mutli-function Appliance
includes packet filter firewall. The firewall protects your company’s
private data while giving your users full Internet access. NAT hides your
internal network from the Internet, giving you additional protection from
hackers. With new SSH remote access, system administrators will be able to
securely connect to their MF840 Mutli-function Appliance without fear of
hackers or snoops. Encrypted passwords, secure key authentication, and root
logins can all be enabled or disabled.
Email
Taurus supports POP3, IMAP4,
SMTP and Multi-drop POP protocol.
Post Office Protocol (POP) is a standard protocol for receiving email.
POP is a client/server protocol in which email is received and held for you
by Taurus. When you read your mail, all of it immediately downloaded to your
computer and no longer maintained on the Taurus. POP3 is built into the
Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers.
POP and IMAP deal with receiving email from your Taurus; Simple Mail
Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is a protocol for transferring email between points
on the Internet. You send email with SMTP and a mail handler receives it on
your recipient's behalf. This mail is read using POP or IMAP.
Web Hosting
MF840 Mutli-function
Appliance makes it easy to set up, configure and monitor multiple Web sites.
You don't have to be an expert to run and manage a reliable and powerful Web
server. MF840 Mutli-function Appliance uses industry leader Apache to serve
Web sites out of the box. During installation, the Configuration menu
automatically configures your server to start Apache if you so choose.
Wireless LAN Ready
Enabling Wireless Access
Point is as easy as plugging in a Samsung 802.11b Wireless WI-FI certified
PC card into the server. The Wireless Access Point's high-powered antenna
offers a range of operation of up to 600 feet (open space), providing
seamless roaming throughout your wireless LAN infrastructure.
The upgrade kit instantly transforms your MF840 Mutli-function appliance
into a complete wireless access point that allows file sharing for Windows
or Macintosh based clients. It also makes it much easier to add or move
workstations, and to provide connectivity in areas where it is difficult to
lay cable.
It is compatible with any 802.11b (Wi-Fi-certified) wireless LAN PC Card or
PCI adapter installed on the client PC. The Taurus Access Point operates in
2.4 GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) for wireless networks in the
home or office environment with transparent bridging and roaming
capabilities. It can be managed remotely via the web-based configuration
menu. It also supports WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and user
authentication to ensure a secure network connection.
